About Data size converter conversion
File sizes and storage capacities get confusing quickly. How many photos of 4 MB fit on a 64 GB card? Is a 2,500 MB file under a 2 GB upload limit? The data converter turns any amount into bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, or terabytes so you can compare like with like.
It is important to know which convention a tool uses. This one is binary: each step up multiplies by 1,024, so one kilobyte is 1,024 bytes and one gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. That matches what Windows and many operating systems report for files. Drive manufacturers and network speeds, however, usually use decimal steps of 1,000, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB on your computer.
Bits are one eighth of a byte. Internet speeds are quoted in bits per second, so a 100 megabit connection moves about 12 megabytes per second at best. Use this tool for sizes, and remember to divide by eight when comparing to connection speeds.
How to do it
- Open Data with the button above; it is preset to Gigabytes → Megabytes.
- Type the size — for example the capacity printed on a memory card.
- Choose other units such as Bits or Terabytes.
- Read the converted size instantly.
- Use Swap to go from smaller units back to larger ones.
