About Speed converter conversion
Speed conversions show up when you drive abroad and the signs switch from mph to km/h, read a sailing or aviation forecast in knots, compare treadmill settings, or work a physics problem that expects meters per second. This tool converts among five units: meters per second, kilometers per hour, feet per second, miles per hour, and knots.
Exact definitions keep things accurate: one mile per hour is exactly 0.44704 m/s, and one knot — one nautical mile per hour — is about 0.514444 m/s. That makes 60 mph roughly 96.56 km/h and a 20-knot wind about 23 mph. Meters per second is the base unit internally, which is also the SI unit used in science classes.
Wind speed scales such as Beaufort and pace units such as minutes per mile are not included; pace is the inverse of speed, so convert it separately. The converter handles any value, from walking speed to aircraft cruise, and switches to scientific notation only for extreme numbers.
Some handy anchors for checking your sense of scale: brisk walking is about 1.4 m/s (5 km/h), a 30 mph urban limit is about 48 km/h, and a 50 km/h European town limit is about 31 mph. Feet per second is common in ballistics, fluid flow, and American engineering texts, and 88 ft/s is exactly 60 mph.
How to do it
- Use the button above; Speed opens with Miles/h → Km/h.
- Type the speed you want to convert.
- Pick other units — Knots for marine and aviation, Meters/sec for physics.
- See the result update as you type.
- Press Swap to convert back the other way.
